Brera Astronomical Observatory

The Brera Astronomical Observatory was founded in Milan in 1764 by the Jesuit astronomer Roger Joseph Boscovich. It was established under a formal decree from Maria Theresa of Austria. It remains one of Italy's oldest scientific institutions.

The observatory is located in the Palazzo di Brera in Milan, Italy. The historic palazzo also houses other important cultural institutions, including the Pinacoteca di Brera art gallery. The observatory's historic domes sit atop this same building.

The observatory became notable for the work of Giovanni Schiaparelli in the 19th century. He famously observed and mapped what he called "canali," or channels, on the surface of Mars. His work sparked massive public interest in the possibility of extraterrestrial life.

While light pollution in modern Milan limits optical observation, the institution remains a crucial hub for astronomical research. It operates as part of the National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF). Today, its scientists focus on high-energy astrophysics, space missions, and the historical preservation of its instruments.
