Brockes Passion

description Brockes Passion Overview

Brockes Passion is George Frideric Handel's setting of Barthold Heinrich Brockes's German poem about the suffering and death of Jesus. Handel composed the work around 1716, during a period when German composers were producing large-scale settings of the same Passion text. It is written for solo voices, chorus, and orchestra, and places lyrical arias and reflective ensembles alongside dramatic scenes drawn from the Gospel narrative.
