description Bruce Graham Overview

Bruce Graham (1925-2010) was a Colombian-born American architect who spent his career at the Chicago office of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM). He is best known for two of Chicago's most significant skyscrapers: the John Hancock Center and the Willis Tower, originally named the Sears Tower, which was the world's tallest building when completed. Graham's work helped define a structural expressionist approach to high-rise architecture. He also contributed to other major projects including the Inland Steel Building in Chicago.

help Bruce Graham FAQ

What did Bruce Graham contribute to the John Hancock Center?

Graham was the lead SOM architect associated with the John Hancock Center, working with structural engineer Fazlur Rahman Khan. Its exposed X-braced tube structure made the Chicago tower visually distinctive while efficiently resisting wind loads.

Was Bruce Graham also the architect of the Sears Tower?

Yes, Graham led the architectural design at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, while Fazlur Rahman Khan developed its bundled-tube structural system. The building opened as the Sears Tower and was renamed Willis Tower in 2009.

How are the John Hancock Center and Willis Tower structurally different?

The John Hancock Center expresses a braced-tube system through the giant diagonal members visible on its exterior. Willis Tower instead uses nine square tubes bundled at different heights, producing its stepped silhouette.

Which architecture firm did Bruce Graham work for?

Graham spent the defining part of his career in the Chicago office of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, commonly called SOM. That practice paired him with engineer Fazlur Rahman Khan on two of Chicago's best-known skyscrapers.
