Bubblegum Crisis

In Bubblegum Crisis, Boomers are mechanical beasts originally created as bio-mechanical laborers to rebuild Tokyo after the Second Great Kanto Earthquake. However, the mysterious Genom corporation now mass-produces them, and they frequently malfunction or go rogue, causing massive destruction. The Knight Sabers, a group of female mercenaries, are the only ones equipped to fight these cybernetic threats.

In the lore of Bubblegum Crisis, Tokyo was decimated by the Second Great Kanto Earthquake seven years prior to the events of the story. The city was rebuilt as MegaTokyo, a sprawling metropolis heavily reliant on the mechanical labor of Boomers. The anime's cyberpunk aesthetic and plot heavily revolve around the corporate dominance of Genom over this rebuilt city.

The Boomers are primarily manufactured and controlled by the Genom corporation, a mysterious and powerful mega-conglomerate in MegaTokyo. While the Boomers were originally created to benefit humanity and rebuild the city, Genom uses them to exert control and military force over the populace. Their corporate greed and secret experiments serve as the main antagonistic force in the anime.

The rogue Boomers are fought by the Knight Sabers, an underground group of four women equipped with specialized, heavily armored hard suits. Because the regular police force cannot handle the advanced cybernetic threats of Genom, the Knight Sabers step in as vigilantes. They utilize advanced music, style, and high-tech weaponry to dismantle the mechanical beasts.
