Cabaret

The Kit Kat Club is where Bob Fosse turns the politics of 1931 Berlin into performance, with Joel Grey's Master of Ceremonies commenting on events through songs like "Willkommen". The club scenes run beside Sally Bowles and Brian Roberts' personal story, so the rise of Nazism is felt as both background and spectacle.

The 1972 film draws from Christopher Isherwood's 1939 book Goodbye to Berlin, John Van Druten's play I Am a Camera, and the Kander and Ebb stage musical Cabaret. The movie changes the stage version heavily, including making many songs appear only inside the cabaret rather than as traditional character numbers.

Cabaret won eight Academy Awards at the 45th Oscars, including Best Director for Bob Fosse, Best Actress for Liza Minnelli, and Best Supporting Actor for Joel Grey. Best Picture went to The Godfather, which is why Cabaret is often remembered as the film with the most Oscar wins without taking the top prize.

Liza Minnelli plays Sally Bowles, an American performer at the Kit Kat Club in Berlin. The role became one of her signature screen performances and won her the 1973 Academy Award for Best Actress.
