Calvary (2014)

Calvary follows Father James Lavelle, a good-hearted rural Irish priest played by Brendan Gleeson, who is threatened with murder during a confession by an unseen man who was abused by a priest as a child. The film unfolds over the week leading up to the threatened killing day, as James interacts with his troubled parishioners.

Calvary was written and directed by John Michael McDonagh, who also wrote and directed 'The Guard' (2011), which likewise starred Brendan Gleeson. The two films are sometimes informally grouped together as part of McDonagh's exploration of Irish themes, though they are not narratively connected.
