Camille Corot

Camille Corot is best known for landscapes, especially poetic rural views and scenes around Ville-d'Avray. He also painted Italian views after traveling to Italy in the 1820s.

Corot is closely associated with the Barbizon painters, though his style is often treated as more lyrical and personal than the core group. He painted in the Forest of Fontainebleau before Barbizon became a famous artists' colony.

Corot's soft tonal landscapes and outdoor studies influenced later 19th-century painting. His approach helped bridge academic landscape traditions and the looser naturalism that preceded Impressionism.

Ville-d'Avray was a place near Paris where Corot's family had a country house. He returned to its ponds, trees, and quiet figures again and again in his paintings.
