Capturing the Friedmans

The documentary was directed by Andrew Jarecki and released in 2003. Jarecki initially set out to make a film about professional birthday party clowns in New York, focusing on one of the Friedman family sons. During the interview, the son revealed his family's dark history involving child abuse charges, completely shifting the documentary's focus.

The Friedman family, specifically the eldest son, was obsessed with recording their daily lives using Super 8 and early VHS camcorders. When the abuse scandal broke, they obsessively documented their family's internal arguments and breakdowns. Jarecki was given unprecedented access to hundreds of hours of this incredibly personal, unfiltered footage.

Arnold Friedman and his youngest son Jesse were charged with multiple counts of sodomy and child sexual abuse in the late 1980s. The allegations stemmed from computer classes Arnold taught in his basement in Great Neck, New York. The documentary explores whether these charges were the result of coerced police interrogations or actual systematic abuse.

The documentary raised massive public doubt about the fairness of Jesse Friedman's conviction, leading to a formal review by the Nassau County District Attorney's office. In 2013, the DA's office released a report stating that while the investigation was flawed, there was not enough evidence to overturn his conviction. Jesse Friedman continues to maintain his innocence and appeals the conviction to this day.
