Carnuntum was a major Roman military and civilian settlement located on the Danube River in present-day Lower Austria, east of Vienna. It served as the capital of the Roman province of Pannonia Superior and hosted the headquarters of the Fourteenth Legion. The archaeological park today includes reconstructed Roman houses, two amphitheaters, and the remains of a forum, public baths, and a heidentor triumphal arch.
