Castell Coch

The site contains remains of a medieval fortress, but the highly decorated castle seen today is primarily a Victorian Gothic Revival creation. William Burges designed it for the third Marquess of Bute in the late 19th century.

Burges combined conical towers, drawbridge imagery, painted ceilings, and richly themed interiors to create an idealized medieval residence. Rooms such as Lady Bute's Bedroom are imaginative Victorian designs rather than reconstructions based solely on surviving evidence.

Castell Coch was conceived as an occasional retreat rather than the family's principal residence. The elaborate building was used relatively little compared with the enormous effort invested in its architecture and decoration.

Both were transformed through the partnership of architect William Burges and the wealthy third Marquess of Bute. Cardiff Castle was the larger urban residence, while Castell Coch became their compact woodland fantasy north of Cardiff.
