Chart Gunpowder Mills

The Chart Gunpowder Mills in Kent were established in the mid-16th century to manufacture black powder for weaponry and defense. The water-powered mills mechanically ground saltpeter, sulfur, and charcoal into explosive gunpowder.

The site has roots tracing back to the mid-16th century, making it one of the world's oldest surviving gunpowder mill complexes. Although the current remaining buildings largely date from the 18th and 19th centuries, the site operated for hundreds of years.

The mills are located in the town of Faversham, situated in the county of Kent, England. Faversham was historically a major center for the British explosives industry due to its access to water power and local wood supplies.

The production process utilized water wheels to power heavy edge-runner stones that crushed the raw ingredients into a fine powder. The water from the nearby stream was essential not just for power, but also to prevent the dangerous friction heat from igniting the powder during milling.
