Château de Vitré

The Château de Vitré was initially constructed in the 11th century to guard the eastern frontier of the Duchy of Brittany against the French. It was a vital defensive structure controlling the traditional border crossings. Over the centuries, it evolved from a simple wooden motte into a massive stone fortress.

The castle is a premier example of a Breton medieval fortress, characterized by its triangular layout that conforms to the shape of the rocky outcrop it sits on. It features massive machicolated towers and high curtain walls designed to repel artillery. In later years, its interior wings were rebuilt in the more comfortable Renaissance style.

The castle was heavily developed by the powerful Laval family, particularly Baron Guy XII of Laval in the late 14th and early 15th centuries. The Laval family transformed the military fortress into a lavish residential palace. Eventually, the property passed through marriage to the Montmorency family.

Like many castles in France, the Château de Vitré was seized and partially dismantled during the French Revolution. It fell into severe disrepair and was used as a military barracks and later a prison. In the 19th century, the town of Vitré eventually purchased the ruins and began a massive restoration project.
