Chester Zoo

Chester Zoo was officially opened to the public in 1931 by George Mottershead, who initially housed animals in his family's suburban garden. The zoo was built on a former nursery site. Mottershead's vision was to create a zoo without traditional barred cages, acting as a safe haven for wildlife.

Located in Upton by Chester, Cheshire, the zoo spans approximately 128 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens. It is widely recognized as the most visited zoo in the UK and a top wildlife attraction in Europe. The expansive grounds allow for massive, open-concept enclosures.

The zoo is famous for its highly successful breeding programs for endangered species, particularly the Eastern black rhino and the Asian elephant. Visitors can also see unique species like the okapi and the giant anteater. It houses over 35,000 animals across hundreds of different species.

The "Islands" exhibit is a massive, immersive area of the zoo designed to replicate the tropical environments of Southeast Asia, specifically regions like Sumatra and Bali. It features a boat ride that takes visitors between the different island habitats. The exhibit focuses heavily on highlighting the zoo's global conservation partnerships.
