China vs Taiwan

It is the political model proposed by Beijing for Taiwanese reunification, originally designed for Hong Kong in 1997. Under this framework, Taiwan would operate as a special administrative region with its own economic system. However, Taipei firmly rejects this proposal, favoring its current independent democratic governance.

The US maintains strategic ambiguity but is legally bound to supply Taiwan with defensive weapons under the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979. While the US officially recognizes the One China policy, it routinely conducts freedom of navigation operations in the Taiwan Strait. These actions serve to deter military aggression from the People's Liberation Army.

TSMC produces the vast majority of the world's most advanced microchips, making Taiwan a linchpin in the global technology supply chain. A military conflict over the island would severely disrupt global electronics manufacturing, impacting major companies like Apple and Nvidia. This economic leverage serves as a massive deterrent against an immediate, full-scale invasion.

It is an unofficial demarcation line drawn in 1955 by the United States during the Cold War to separate air and sea controls. For decades, both sides largely respected this boundary, but recently Chinese military aircraft routinely cross it. These crossings serve as a form of gray-zone warfare designed to pressure Taipei.
