Choir Boy

description Choir Boy Overview

Choir Boy is a play by American dramatist Tarell Alvin McCraney, first produced in 2012. It centers on Pharus Young, a gifted student leading the gospel choir at the fictional Charles R. Drew Prep School for Boys, an elite institution for young Black men. Conflicts surrounding Pharus's sexuality, religious tradition, school discipline, and competing ideas of masculinity unfold through dialogue and a cappella spirituals, making choral performance part of both the story and its dramatic structure.
