Christian Chopin is a French geologist famous for his 1984 discovery of the mineral coesite in the Dora Maira massif of the Western Alps. Finding this high-pressure silica mineral in continental crust provided the first definitive proof of ultra-high-pressure metamorphism. This groundbreaking discovery transformed the earth sciences.

The presence of coesite proves that surface-level continental rocks were forced deep into the Earth's mantle—at least 100 kilometers down—and subjected to immense pressure before being pushed back up. Before Christian Chopin's 1984 discovery, the scientific community did not believe continental crust could be subducted so deeply. It fundamentally changed our understanding of plate tectonics.
