description Christoph Scheiner Overview
Christoph Scheiner (1573-1650) was a German Jesuit priest, mathematician, and astronomer who taught at the University of Ingolstadt. From 1611 he made systematic telescopic observations of sunspots and, in his 1613 work Tres epistolae de maculis solaribus, argued that they were objects transiting the Sun rather than blemishes on its surface, entering a dispute with Galileo over priority. Scheiner's later work Rosa Ursina sive Sol (1626-30) summarized contemporary knowledge of the Sun and the solar phenomena.
