Colbitz-Letzlinger Heide

Colbitz-Letzlinger Heide is located in the state of Saxony-Anhalt in central Germany, north of the city of Magdeburg. It spans a vast area and is one of the most significant protected heathland landscapes in the country.

Parts of Colbitz-Letzlinger Heide are accessible to the public as a protected landscape, but portions remain restricted because the area includes a former military training ground. Visitors should observe posted signage, as some zones may be off-limits due to unexploded ordnance or conservation requirements.

Colbitz-Letzlinger Heide is the second largest contiguous heathland in Germany. Its size and ecological continuity make it an important habitat for heathland flora and fauna rare in intensively farmed central Europe.

Colbitz-Letzlinger Heide was used as a military training area because its expansive, relatively flat terrain and low population density made it suitable for large-scale exercises. After military use ceased, parts of the heath were designated for nature conservation to protect its ecological value.
