Competition Pro Joystick

The classic Competition Pro is generally a digital joystick using directional switches rather than a continuously measuring analog stick. That design made it a natural fit for 8-bit and 16-bit computers such as the Commodore 64 and Amiga.

The joystick became strongly associated with home computers that used Atari-style 9-pin ports, including the Commodore 64, Amiga, and Atari ST. A modern PC usually needs a compatible USB adapter because those original ports are not standard USB.

Its simple switch-based mechanism and sturdy arcade-style handle were well suited to fast platformers, shooters, and racing games. The absence of an analog axis is a feature for many classic games because those titles expect clear on-or-off directional input.

The original connector does not plug directly into a Windows USB port, so an adapter or USB remake is required. Once recognized by Windows as a game controller, its four directions and fire buttons can be mapped in compatible emulators.
