Jane Doe, released in 2001 through Equal Vision Records, is a concept album centered on themes of heartbreak, loss, and emotional devastation, with the titular 'Jane Doe' serving as a symbol of a lost, unnamed woman. The album's narrative explores the breakdown of a relationship through some of the most chaotic and intense music in the metalcore canon.

The album's striking cover artwork was designed by Converge's vocalist Jacob Bannon, who has created visual art for nearly all of the band's releases. The monochromatic image of a woman's face has become one of the most iconic and recognizable images in underground heavy music.

Jane Doe features the first appearance of bassist Nate Newton, who joined the band for this album alongside vocalist Jacob Bannon, guitarist Kurt Ballou, and drummer Ben Koller. This four-piece lineup has remained stable and is considered Converge's definitive roster.

Jane Doe was released in 2001 through Equal Vision Records, making it Converge's fourth studio album. The band later moved to Epitaph Records for subsequent releases, but Jane Doe remains a landmark release on Equal Vision that helped define the metalcore and mathcore genres.
