Coprinellus micaceus

description Coprinellus micaceus Overview

Coprinellus micaceus, the mica cap, is a common saprotrophic mushroom that fruits in dense clusters on buried wood, stumps, and roots of broad-leaved trees. Its tawny to yellow-brown caps may carry sparkling granular remnants of the universal veil, giving the species its mica-like appearance. The gills darken as spores mature, a characteristic of ink cap mushrooms. Its edibility is treated cautiously because related species can be difficult to distinguish.
