Counterfeit Monkey

Released in 2012 by Emily Short, the game is set in a fictional version of Atlantis where linguistic technology can alter reality. The player joins an underground movement aiming to dismantle the authoritarian government's strict controls over language manipulation.

The gameplay centers around using various linguistic tools to physically change objects by altering the letters in their names. For example, players can use a tool to remove a letter and turn a "spade" into a "pad," or utilize an anagramming device to turn a "cat" into an "act."

Counterfeit Monkey was written by Emily Short using the Inform 7 programming language. It is frequently cited as one of the most technically impressive and complex parser games ever built using the Inform system.

While it did not compete in the annual Interactive Fiction Competition due to its massive scope, it was a finalist for the 2012 Xyzzy Award for Best Game. It ultimately won Xyzzy Awards for Best Puzzles and Best Individual NPC.
