description Craco Badlands Overview
The Craco Badlands are areas of strongly eroded clay-rich terrain surrounding Craco in the Basilicata region of southern Italy. Their ridges, gullies, and steep bare slopes are examples of the landforms locally called calanchi, produced where erosion acts on soft sedimentary ground. They form the distinctive landscape below Craco's abandoned historic center, whose evacuation began after a major landslide in 1963 and continued as geological instability and other hazards affected the settlement.
