help Cruise FAQ

Did Cruise offer fully autonomous rides?

Cruise operated driverless robotaxi services in parts of California, especially San Francisco, before its service was suspended. General Motors announced in December 2024 that it would stop funding Cruise’s robotaxi development.

Who owned Cruise?

Cruise became a General Motors subsidiary, and GM completed its acquisition of the remaining Cruise ownership in February 2025. GM then shifted the technology effort toward autonomous and assisted driving for personal vehicles.

Why did Cruise stop its robotaxi program?

GM said the cost and time needed to scale the robotaxi business were too high in an increasingly competitive market. The decision followed major regulatory and safety problems, including the suspension of Cruise’s California driverless operations in 2023.

Can I currently hail a Cruise robotaxi in California?

The former public robotaxi service should not be treated as an active consumer ride option. GM’s 2024 decision ended its funded robotaxi development path, and Cruise’s public ridehail service was not relaunched.
