Cyrus Vance was an American lawyer, diplomat, and government official who served as United States secretary of state under President Jimmy Carter from 1977 to 1980. He resigned after opposing the 1980 military attempt to rescue American hostages in Iran, favoring continued diplomatic efforts. Earlier, Vance served as secretary of the Army and deputy secretary of defense. In the 1990s, he also worked as a United Nations special envoy during negotiations concerning Bosnia.
