Dances with Wolves (1990)

Dances with Wolves won seven Academy Awards at the 63rd Academy Awards ceremony in 1991, including Best Picture and Best Director for Kevin Costner. The film was nominated for twelve Oscars in total.

Graham Greene received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Kicking Bird, and Rodney A. Grant played Wind In His Hair. Mary McDonnell played Stands With A Fist, a white woman raised by the Lakota, and was nominated for Best Supporting Actress.

A significant portion of the dialogue in Dances with Wolves is spoken in the Lakota Sioux language, requiring subtitles for English-speaking audiences. The film was one of the first major Hollywood productions to feature substantial Native American language dialogue.

Dances with Wolves was filmed primarily in South Dakota, including locations near Pierre and the Triple U Buffalo Ranch, which provided the buffalo herd for the famous hunt sequence. Additional filming took place in Wyoming.
