Daphne du Maurier was an English novelist, playwright, and short story writer active during the 20th century. She is best known for her 1938 gothic suspense novel Rebecca, which won the National Book Award and was adapted into an Academy Award-winning film by Alfred Hitchcock. Several of her other works, including Jamaica Inn and the short story The Birds, were also famously adapted by Hitchcock. Her writing often explores themes of suspense, psychology, and the Gothic tradition.
