David Matza

description David Matza Overview

David Matza was an American sociologist and criminologist associated with interpretive approaches to deviance and juvenile delinquency. With Gresham Sykes, he developed the concept of techniques of neutralization, describing justifications that allow offenders temporarily to set aside conventional moral commitments. In Delinquency and Drift, Matza argued that many young offenders move between conformity and lawbreaking instead of remaining wholly committed to a criminal subculture. His work challenged strongly deterministic explanations of delinquency.
