David Stuart

David Stuart made groundbreaking contributions to the decipherment of Maya hieroglyphic writing, particularly demonstrating how the Maya used composite signs to create phonetic spellings. In the late 1980s, he proposed the 'Sign Substitution' theory, which helped unlock the phonetic structure of many previously unreadable glyphs. This completely revolutionized the field of Maya epigraphy.

David Stuart was awarded the prestigious MacArthur 'Genius Grant' Fellowship in 1984 when he was just 18 years old. He received the award for his extraordinary teenage talent in reading ancient Maya script. This made him the youngest recipient of the award up to that point in the foundation's history.

David Stuart worked closely with the pioneering Mayanist Linda Schele, forming a crucial mentorship that led to massive breakthroughs in understanding Palenque's dynastic history. Together with other scholars, they deciphered the inscriptions of the Temple of Inscriptions at the famous 1973 Mesa Redonda round table. Stuart's father, George Stuart, was also an archaeologist who facilitated David's early exposure to the ruins.

David Stuart currently serves as a professor at the University of Texas at Austin, where he directs the Mesoamerica Center. He is heavily involved with the university's Department of Art and Art History and oversees the Mesoamerica Meetings. He also played a vital role in the discovery and translation of the Temple of the Inscriptions at Copan.
