De Mairan's Nebula (Messier 43) is a small H II region located north of the Orion Nebula (M42), from which it is separated by a dark dust lane. First described by Jean-Jacques d'Ortous de Mairan in 1731, it is approximately 1,600 light-years from Earth and part of the larger Orion molecular cloud complex. The nebula is illuminated by the star NU Orionis, which is responsible for ionizing the surrounding hydrogen gas and causing it to glow. It was added to Charles Messier's catalog in 1769, becoming object M43.
