Dean Rusk was an American diplomat and public official who served as United States Secretary of State from 1961 to 1969 under Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. He was involved in the administration's response to the Cuban Missile Crisis and remained in office during the expansion of U.S.
military involvement in the Vietnam War. Rusk had earlier worked in the State Department and helped shape postwar international policy.
