Dekalog

The series consists of ten distinct, one-hour films, each loosely based on one of the Ten Commandments. Originally produced for Polish television in 1988, the films were directed by acclaimed Polish filmmaker Krzysztof Kieslowski. All ten episodes take place within the same bleak housing project in Warsaw.

The haunting and minimalist musical score for "Dekalog" was composed by Zbigniew Preisner. This marked the beginning of a legendary collaboration between the composer and director Krzysztof Kieslowski. Preisner's music would later become a hallmark of their subsequent acclaimed "Three Colors" trilogy.

For many years, "Dekalog" was difficult to find outside of arthouse cinema, but it has recently been made available on streaming platforms like the Criterion Channel. The Criterion Collection also released a highly praised remastered Blu-ray box set. Availability may vary, but physical media and curated streaming services are the best options.

While each episode tells a standalone story focusing on a specific moral dilemma, they are loosely connected by their shared setting in a massive Warsaw apartment complex. Characters from one episode occasionally make brief cameo appearances in another. The thematic through-line of human fragility and morality ties the entire anthology together.
