help Dell EMC TimeFinder FAQ

Is Dell EMC TimeFinder a remote replication product?

TimeFinder primarily creates local point-in-time copies on Dell EMC Symmetrix, VMAX, and PowerMax storage. Dell's SRDF family handles replication between arrays and can be combined with TimeFinder snapshots or clones.

What is TimeFinder SnapVX?

SnapVX creates targetless snapshots by storing changed tracks in the source device's storage resource pool. Administrators can later link one snapshot to one or more target devices when a host-accessible copy is required.

What is the difference between a TimeFinder snapshot and clone?

A SnapVX snapshot preserves a point-in-time image efficiently and does not initially require a target device. A clone creates an independent target copy, which can consume more capacity but is useful for testing, backup workflows, or recovery.

Can TimeFinder snapshots be restored to SRDF volumes?

Yes, Dell documents snapshot and clone operations on both SRDF R1 and R2 volumes. The supported restore behavior depends on the SRDF mode and pair state, so administrators must check the relevant PowerMax state tables before executing recovery.
