Democracy 4 was developed by Positech Games, a UK-based indie studio led by Cliff Harris, and released in 2020. It is the fourth main entry in the Democracy series, which began with Democracy in 2005.

Democracy 4 models national governance through interconnected policy sliders that affect voter demographics, economic indicators, and social outcomes. Implementing a policy in one area can have cascading effects on unrelated areas, simulating the complex trade-offs of real-world political decision-making.

Rather than playing as a specific party, you play as the sitting government and can implement policies across the political spectrum, from socialist to libertarian to authoritarian.
