Dendera Zodiac

The original Dendera Zodiac ceiling relief was removed from Egypt in the 19th century and is currently on display at the Musée du Louvre in Paris, France. It was originally carved into the ceiling of the Hathor temple at Dendera. A detailed replica currently sits in its place at the original Egyptian temple.

The Dendera Zodiac was created during the Greco-Roman period of ancient Egypt and is notable for blending Egyptian and Babylonian celestial imagery. It depicts the 12 zodiac signs, planets, and constellations arranged in a circular map. It provides a fascinating look at how ancient Egyptians integrated foreign astronomical concepts.

The Dendera Zodiac dates back to the late Ptolemaic or Roman period, roughly around the 1st century BCE. It was famously discovered by French explorers during Napoleon Bonaparte's military campaign in Egypt in 1799. The ceiling relief was later blasted out and transported to France in the 1820s.

When the Dendera Zodiac was brought to Europe, it sparked intense debate because some scholars believed the celestial arrangement dated back thousands of years earlier to around 15,000 BCE. This astronomical controversy challenged biblical timelines and early understandings of history. Eventually, Egyptologists confirmed the relief was of Greco-Roman origin based on the temple's cartouches.
