Dingwall Combustion 4

The fanned frets (multi-scale design) on the Dingwall Combustion 4 give the lower strings longer scale lengths for tighter, more defined low-end response, while shorter scales on the higher strings maintain comfortable string tension and articulation. The scale lengths range from approximately 34 inches on the G string to 37 inches on the B string. This design eliminates the muddy B-string problem common on conventional 4-string and 5-string basses.

The Dingwall Combustion 4 is equipped with Dingwall's proprietary FD-style passive pickups paired with an active EMG preamp, typically the EMG BTS or similar 3-band system. The electronics offer extensive tonal flexibility, from warm, vintage passive tones to aggressive modern slap sounds. A push-pull pot on the volume knob allows bypassing the active preamp for true passive operation.

Dingwall basses are most closely associated with progressive metal and modern rock, with notable players including Adam 'Nolly' Getgood (Periphery) and Shayley Bourget. Their tight low B string and even string-to-string response make them especially popular for down-tuned and extended-range playing. However, the versatility of the active electronics makes them suitable for funk, jazz, and session work as well.
