Doi Inthanon Twin Chedis

The twin chedis, known as Phra Mahathat Naphamethanidon and Naphamethanidon, were built in the 1980s to honor the 60th birthdays of Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit. The taller, pinkish chedis was built for the King, while the brownish one was built for the Queen. They were constructed as a tribute to their dedication to the Thai people and the environment.

The Twin Chedis are located near the very top of Doi Inthanon, the highest mountain in Thailand. They sit within the boundaries of Doi Inthanon National Park in the Chiang Mai province. Because of their high elevation, the chedis are often surrounded by cool mist and offer spectacular views of the surrounding valleys.

The chedis were commissioned by the Thai Royal Forest Department and the Thai Air Force, utilizing funds donated by the Thai public. They were designed to blend traditional Buddhist religious architecture with modern construction techniques. The royal family played a direct role in overseeing the aesthetic and spiritual elements of the structures.

Inside the King's chedi is a revered green Buddha image, while the Queen's chedis contains a white Buddha image. The walls of both structures feature intricate murals detailing the lives, works, and dedication of the royal family to the Thai people. The terraces surrounding the chedis also offer stunning, panoramic views of the national park below.
