Don Knotts

On The Andy Griffith Show, Sheriff Andy Taylor generally required Barney to keep his single bullet in his shirt pocket. The recurring gag reflected Barney's nervousness and tendency to overreact despite his pride in police procedure.

Knotts won five Primetime Emmy Awards for his performance as Barney Fife. He played the deputy as a regular during the first five seasons and later returned for guest appearances.

Knotts left regular duty after the fifth season when he believed the series was nearing its planned conclusion and pursued a film contract. The show continued, while Knotts starred in movies such as The Ghost and Mr. Chicken.

He played Ralph Furley, the flamboyantly dressed landlord who replaced the Ropers as the building's on-screen manager. Knotts joined the ABC sitcom in 1979 and remained through its final season.
