help DoomRL FAQ

How does DoomRL turn Doom into a roguelike?

DoomRL keeps Doom's weapons, demons, medkits, armor, and fast pressure, but converts the action into turn-based tile movement. You still fight imps, former humans, cacodemons, and barons, but every step and shot is a tactical decision.

Who created DoomRL?

DoomRL was created by Kornel Kisielewicz, who later founded ChaosForge. The project began in the early 2000s and became one of the best-known examples of a roguelike adapting a shooter license without using the original engine.

Is DoomRL related to Jupiter Hell?

Yes, Jupiter Hell is the commercial spiritual successor from ChaosForge. It keeps the DoomRL idea of fast turn-based gun combat, but uses 3D visuals and an original sci-fi setting.

Does DoomRL use ASCII graphics?

Classic DoomRL is strongly associated with ASCII and tile-based roguelike presentation. Later versions also supported graphical tiles, but its design still comes from traditional roguelikes rather than first-person shooters.
