Dorothea Klumpke was an American-born astronomer who worked in France and became the first woman to receive a doctorate in mathematical sciences from the University of Paris in 1893. She later contributed to the international Carte du Ciel project, an effort to photograph and catalogue the stars, and directed work connected with the Paris Observatory's star-mapping activities. Her career helped establish a place for women in professional astronomy during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
