Douglas Finkbeiner

Douglas Finkbeiner is an American astronomer and a professor of astronomy and physics at Harvard University. He is best known for his observational astrophysics research, particularly in mapping large-scale cosmic structures.

The Fermi Bubbles are massive, mysterious structures of gamma-ray light that stretch tens of thousands of light-years above and below the Milky Way's Galactic plane. Finkbeiner co-discovered them in 2010 by analyzing data from NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope.

Besides the Fermi Bubbles, Finkbeiner has extensively researched interstellar dust and its microwave emissions. His work helps cosmologists remove this foreground dust "noise" when studying the Cosmic Microwave Background.

They were discovered by using advanced statistical algorithms to look for excess gamma-ray emissions that could not be explained by known astrophysical sources. Finkbeiner and his team were originally searching for signs of dark matter annihilation when the giant bubbles emerged from the data.
