description Douglas-fir Beetle Overview
The Douglas-fir beetle, Dendroctonus pseudotsugae, is a bark beetle native to western North America and associated primarily with Douglas-fir trees. Adult beetles tunnel through the bark and construct galleries in the inner bark, where eggs are laid and larvae develop. Populations commonly increase in drought-stressed, damaged, windthrown, or otherwise weakened trees, and heavy infestations can kill mature Douglas-firs across affected stands.
