description Downside Abbey Overview

Downside Abbey is a Roman Catholic Benedictine monastery at Stratton-on-the-Fosse in Somerset, England. The community was established there in 1814 by monks whose predecessors had lived in exile on the European continent after the English Reformation. Its large Gothic Revival abbey church was developed in stages during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and the monastery was historically associated with Downside School.
