Dragonquest is a science fiction/fantasy novel by Anne McCaffrey published in 1971, the second book in the Dragonriders of Pern series. The novel continues the story of the planet Pern, where inhabitants have bred fire-breathing dragons to combat Thread, a deadly spore that periodically falls from the sky. The book explores the political tensions between traditional dragonriders and those who wish to rediscover the technological heritage of Pern's original settlers. McCaffrey became the first woman to win a Hugo Award for fiction with the earlier novella "Weyr Search," which introduced the Pern universe.
