Ducal Palace, Mantua

The Ducal Palace in Mantua was the primary residence of the Gonzaga family, who ruled the city as lords, marquises, and eventually dukes from the 14th to the 18th century. The Gonzaga family accumulated vast art collections and commissioned works from leading Renaissance artists to decorate their palace.

The Camera degli Sposi, or 'Bridal Chamber,' is a room decorated with extraordinary frescoes by Renaissance painter Andrea Mantegna between 1465 and 1474. The painted illusionistic oculus on the ceiling, showing figures looking down from above, is considered a masterpiece of early Renaissance perspective painting.

The Ducal Palace is located in the center of Mantua (Mantova), a city in the Lombardy region of northern Italy. Mantua itself is surrounded by three artificial lakes and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its Renaissance urban and architectural heritage.

The Ducal Palace complex covers approximately 34,000 square meters and contains roughly 500 rooms, making it one of the largest palace complexes in Europe by area. It is not a single building but rather an interconnected group of structures, courtyards, and gardens built and expanded over several centuries by the Gonzaga family.
