École Polytechnique

École Polytechnique, often referred to simply as 'l'X,' is a prestigious French grande école renowned for providing elite education in engineering, science, and public service. It is considered one of the most selective and academically demanding universities in the country. Historically, it has served as a primary training ground for high-level executives, scientists, and military officers in France.

École Polytechnique was founded in 1794 during the turbulent era of the French Revolution. The National Convention established the school to urgently train a new generation of engineers and scientists to help rebuild the nation's infrastructure and military. It was later placed under strict military authority by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1804.

The main campus of École Polytechnique is located in Palaiseau, a commune situated approximately 27 kilometers south of central Paris. The university moved to this massive, sprawling 164-hectare campus in 1976 to accommodate its growing student body and research facilities. It now serves as a foundational anchor of the Paris-Saclay technology and innovation hub.

Admission for French students is incredibly rigorous and requires passing a highly competitive national exam after completing two to three years of intensive post-secondary study in 'classes préparatoires.' International students are admitted through a separate, highly selective process based on academic excellence, often requiring top scores in mathematics and physics. The institution only accepts a very small percentage of its annual applicants.
