Ed Viesturs is an American high-altitude mountaineer known for climbing all fourteen mountains higher than 8,000 metres without supplemental oxygen. He completed that project in 2005, becoming the first American to reach every summit in the group. Viesturs is also associated with a conservative approach to expedition climbing that emphasizes acclimatization, personal judgment, and retreat when weather or physical conditions make continuing unsafe.
