Edward Douglass White was an American lawyer and politician who served as the ninth Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1910 until 1921. Prior to his appointment as Chief Justice, he served as an Associate Justice and as a U.S. Senator from Louisiana. His tenure on the Supreme Court is noted for establishing the "rule of reason" standard in antitrust law through the 1911 Standard Oil Company v.
United States decision. He also served as a soldier in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War.
