Edward Emerson Barnard (1857–1923) was an American observational astronomer who joined the staff of Lick Observatory in California and later moved to Yerkes Observatory in Wisconsin. He discovered Jupiter's fifth moon, Amalthea, in 1892, the first Jovian satellite found since Galileo's time, and measured the exceptionally large proper motion of Barnard's Star in 1916. His photographic survey of dark regions in the Milky Way, published posthumously, demonstrated that many were clouds of obscuring dust and gas.
