Einsiedeln Abbey

The Gnadenkapelle (Chapel of Grace) inside the abbey church houses a venerated Black Madonna statue, which is the focal point of Einsiedeln's status as Switzerland's most important Roman Catholic pilgrimage site. The statue, darkened by centuries of candle smoke and varnish, draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims annually.

The monastery was originally established in the 10th century, with tradition attributing its founding to Saint Meinrad around 934. The current imposing Baroque structure was designed by architect Caspar Moosbrugger and largely completed in the early 18th century.

Einsiedeln Abbey is located in the town of Einsiedeln in the Swiss canton of Schwyz, approximately 50 kilometers southeast of Zurich. It is easily accessible by train and is a popular day-trip destination for visitors exploring central Switzerland.

The most famous legend is the Engelweihe (angelic consecration), in which Christ himself allegedly consecrated the original chapel in 948. This miracle, along with Saint Meinrad's martyrdom near the site in 861, established Einsiedeln as a major medieval pilgrimage destination rivaling Santiago de Compostela.
